Recycling is up in Chester with wheelie bins launch

Written by: Chester Standard - 9th July, 2009 | Posted: 17/07/2009

RESIDENTS in and around the Chester area have not wasted time boosting the city's recycling rates.

Officials from Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) say early indications show more people than ever are recycling since the new wheelie bin waste collection scheme was launched on June 15.

There have been four official collection dates and although the local authority admits to teething problems in a relatively few places, they believe the new blue, green and brown bin system introduced at eight out of 10 households in the Chester area has gone down well.

Critics of the scheme, however, say the council's waste advice line has been inundated with calls from annoyed residents.

Scheme could mean £30m theatre and performing arts centre for Chester

Written by: Chester Chronicle 9th July, 2009 | Posted: 17/07/2009

CHESTER could be in line for an iconic £30m theatre and performing arts centre.

A blueprint for the scheme was outlined during a briefing of senior councillors on 8th July.

The preferred option would see the building sited by the River Dee on the Little Roodee car park.

It may feature a conference centre large enough to compete with rivals in Liverpool and Manchester.

A report says the cultural life of the city must be developed if Chester is ‘to stand alongside European destinations like York, Bruges and Siena’.

The stalled Northgate Development was supposed to deliver a performing arts centre following the closure of the Gateway auditorium in 2007.

But the Tory executive of Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) recognises urgent progress is needed and will officially back a feasibility study next week.

Chester Bin Fairy to help with uncollected rubbish

Written by: Allison Dickinson, Chester Chronicle | Posted: 17/07/2009

UNCOLLECTED rubbish will soon be a thing of the past – thanks to the Chester Bin Fairy.

The magical character is the brainchild of an anonymous Hoole resident who is fed up of refuse collectors not taking his bins away.

He decided to do something about it and help others in the same position.

“A friend of mine runs a blog in Birmingham which has been very successful and is now monitored by their City Council,” he said.
“So I set up an email account, Twitter page and website to try and get the message out.

“I had three enquiries in as many days – the same day I set it up I got a message saying, ‘Thank God someone is doing this!’.
“If people see rubbish or litter on the streets, or see rubbish that hasn't been taken away, they often don't go to the council because they assume someone has already reported it.

“The whole point of the bin fairy is that it’s fun and can do some community good.”
