About Us
Chester Communities Together is an organisation formed by local community groups to ensure a strong voice is available to support its membership. Group members include; The Canal Basin Forum, Lache Park Ltd, Kingsway and Newton Residents Association, City Centre and Newtown Neighbourhood Partnership, Northgate Village Residents Association (page tbc), King Street Area Residents Association (page tbc), The Garden Quarter, Brook Lane West Residents Association (page tbc) among others. It is also in talks with other groups who are looking to become involved.
The group uses its partnership links with organisation such as Chester Voluntary Action, the local police, council, PCT etc to ensure that its members and the wider community are made aware of issues that could affect them. Current issues that group members are involved in include the new refuse collection service, potential flood risks and community facilities.
The current officers of the group and their own organisations are:
Avril Coady (Chairman) from the Canal Basin Forum
Vic Lockley (Vice Chairman) from Lache Park Limited
Martyn Delaney (Secretary) from City Centre and Newtown Neighbourhood Partnership
Ann Charlton (Treasurer) from Kingsway and Newton Residents Association
The group also has an executive committee formed from one member from each of the current member organisations
Chester Communities Together partnered up with the University of Chester to deliver its website and sees the site as a vital means of communication in today’s digital society. The site looks to be inclusive by incorporating translation facilities and other downloadable devices to ensure all members of the community can access the site. It also includes a ‘Facebook’ and ‘Twitter’ site to appeal to the digital communities and social networking community members.
The project was handled by the Harlequin Project, a group initiative formed within the Computer Science and Information Systems Department at the University of Chester which exists to help locally based artists and community groups promote their activities, communicate via the web, and publish their creative work. Dr Jan Shaylor, Senior Lecturer and Project Manager, has integrated the Harlequin activities into her multimedia teaching, giving the students' an opportunity to learn through practical experience while developing professional multimedia products for the community. This is supported by members of staff.
Specially designed websites and production DVD's and CDs have been produced for a range of different organisations. The project is part of the consultancy and knowledge transfer work of the University of Chester.
